Leveraging views to Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains, Surly Crab is conceived as a modern interpretation of the time-honored beach house. Located on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state, the home rests on the shoreline and rises into the trees offering big views of the mountains and the waterway, as well as affording intimate connections to nature.

The home serves as a retreat for family and friends, a place they can gather and enjoy time together in this natural landscape, rich with ferns, rhododendrons, madrone, and fir.

The house is organized into three structures. A two-story main living area, aligned with the beach, is located on the footprint of an old fishing cabin. A guest wing and primary bedroom wing extend behind, elevated and hugging the edge of the forest.

Glazed hallways connect the structures and open to views both near and far, while transitioning from one part of the home to the other. By separating the program into three structures, nature’s variety comes into focus and one’s relationship with nature is accentuated.
