What is Architecture?

The art of wasting space?
An expression of our cultural values?
A way to make reality more like our dreams?

Every practicing Architect finds themselves asking these questions once in a while.

Architecture schools, too, encourage every student to come up with their own definitions. It’s a part of the soul-searching process every creative person goes through. What am I trying to do with my designs? They ask, what forces shape the way a building/street/city is formed?

Sometimes an Architect is no more than an efficient pen under these forces.

Sometimes, he is an Artist, and leaves an unexpected, often controversial mark on Earth.

But one thing that every great Architect has in common is they have an ever-evolving definition of what  they think Architecture is. Here are the 100 ways of seeing Architecture by the most influential Architects of last century:
